Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. The practice involves focusing on traumatic memories while engaging in side-to-side eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. EMDR is a form of exposure therapy, a set of techniques to treat anxiety.
Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment that's designed to help individuals confront their fears. When people are afraid of something, they tend to avoid it. Although this avoidance can provide short-term relief, it can actually make the fear stronger in the long run. Exposure therapy aims to break this cycle by gradually and repeatedly exposing individuals to the feared object or context without any danger, thereby helping them reduce their fear over time.
